Villa Xhala

See, dream, transform – the renovation of Villa ‘Xhala’ in Sardinia

It was a mild afternoon when a good friend handed us the exposé of this historic villa in the north of Sardinia. We had actually been planning to buy a small house on the island – but was this perhaps just the right moment? The coffee cup was barely empty before the decision was already made. It was clear from the very first viewing appointment: this unspoilt place with old trees, wild goats and an unobstructed view of the coast was to become our new Mediterranean retreat in Sardinia.

What began as a spontaneous decision became a project close to our hearts. Like us, many people dream of transforming an abandoned building with character into a habitable place on a remote island or in the middle of nature. But between vision and realisation lie time, planning, craftsmen and costs – all factors that need to be well coordinated.
In contrast to my previous projects in Europe, where I worked with architects, structural engineers and builders, I had all the reins in my own hands for this project – a challenge that turned out to be a real stroke of luck. The complete renovation of the villa, consisting of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a spacious eat-in kitchen with an open-plan living area and a generous outdoor area with a pool, was realised in just six months – thanks to my many years of experience as an interior designer and a great team of partners and craftsmen from the region.

The new design concept focusses on openness, light and the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. A central element is the large terrace, which connects the kitchen/living room and the landscape. A small staircase leads to the four lower-level bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Existing materials such as natural stone floors and wall structures have been retained and harmoniously integrated into the new design. The colourful tiles in the bathrooms, once accidental finds, also have a permanent place in our hearts – and in the house.
A small guest pavilion with its own terrace is currently being built – perfect for enjoying the first rays of sunshine in the morning. Furniture from the Tribù brand and selected pieces from our home in Germany complement the interior and create a high-quality, personalised atmosphere.

A project like this is never completely ‘finished’. You change, adapt, optimise – a historic house is always on the move. And then there are the external influences: Wild boars, goats, sudden changes in the weather – things you can’t control in Sardinia, but accept with a smile.

True to the Sicilian proverb:
‘Mastru Cola, cu ‘na furma’ – A true master goes his own way.
Villa Xhala has not only become our home, but also an address for clients who want to renovate, remodel or design in Sardinia. See. Dream. Transform.
